A sad day today, learning the news of Art Dudley’s passing. He was a great writer and one of the kindest people I have dealt with. Once, in a random Facebook thread I commented that I had barely any Listener magazines, he immediately messaged me and offered to send me whatever back issues he had lying about. He refused to take and payment for this, or the shipping which was not inconsiderable given he was sending heavy magazines half way across the world.
His sonic predilections and my own were obviously similarly aligned, and his column in Stereophile was the reason I maintained a subscription.
He once said: “Music is easy to miss for the listener who thinks his job is to concentrate on the sound.” And I couldn’t agree more.
He will be missed.
