Well, I have sold my Garrard 401. It is an amazing machine and it has gone to a really good home so I am pleased. This unlikely turn of events was to help fund a couple of new things, namely a dCS Network Bridge, and a new cartridge.
The dCS should be the last digital source I need. There are so many positive reviews out there that I don’t need to repeat any of it. Should be here in 6 weeks or so apparently, so watch this space.
Having heard a fair few dCS products, I am expecting good things, especially as it is a fairly sizeable sum for such a contraption.
In the meantime you can read about it here, there, and everywhere.
I am thinking of buying a shorter digital coaxial cable, as the Nordost Blue Heaven I currently use is 2m long, and it will just get a bit messy given the way I plan to set everything up. Likely contender is an Audioquest Carbon at this stage. I used Audioquest cables for a long time and always found them to be good.
The new cartridge is something a bit special and hasn’t officially been announced yet as far as I am aware, but it is an anniversary model and will be pretty cool. EMT is celebrating their 80th year of operation so they decided a rework of a venerable classic was due. It is an updated version of the my favourite TSD15 with a newly designed body made of milled magnesium, with silver coils and a sapphire cantilever and a multi-radius stylus. Not a cheap thing, and limited to 80 pieces worldwide. I even get to choose my own serial number!
The current TSD15 has been in production for exactly 50 years, and the EMT gurus have carefully reworked it so it is ready for the next 50.
According to EMT, “the process started with a detailed study of countless original documents to ensure respect for the tradition and expertise of the past generations. By combining these with modern engineering and manufacturing methods, we finally achieved the goal: a revised TONDOSE that lives up to its name.
