Point Source

I had the opportunity to purchase a pair of used Omega single driver speakers recently, which I jumped at. I have been wanting a pair of full-range speakers for a while, and whilst I would love to buy some Shindo Lafites or something like that, the cost is too prohibitive for me right now. I had also considered some Line Magnetic 755 field coils, but they’re getting harder to get hold of now.

So far I have only tried them with my Shindo Cortese, and they sound pretty great. I suspect though that I will get even better performance pairing them with my Leben CS300F, or even the Transcendent Mini Beast when I get around to building it. Shindo amps tend to like a benign load, and although the Omegas are on paper pretty sensitive, they are quite reactive too, which I am sure the Shindo amp isn’t enjoying.

The ones I have acquired are the Super 7XRS Mk 2. They’re really small, but the single point source makes them sound like a much bigger speaker. They’re very enjoyable to listen to, and make a compelling argument for the simplicity of a single driver in a box, with no crossover to get in the way. I’ve tried a few different types of music with them, from ambient through to black metal, and it all sounds good. If anything the slightly rolled off nature of the single driver assists in taming some of the high frequency excesses of mid 90s black metal recordings. Ulver’s Nattens Madrigal becomes almost easy listening… well not quite, but it certainly is less ear bleedingly bright.

Early days yet though, and I will continue to explore their presentation.

‘XRS stands for Xtended Room Speaker. What is extended? The all important midrange, the width and depth of the soundstage, the bottom end, and the “hugeness” of the presentation from a very compact speaker . The bass port is angled downward on the 7XRS MK2, enhancing the bottom end. The wide baffles on all these models enhance the midrange, giving a wide open unboxed sound and tremendous imaging. The back tilt projects the music out into the room lessening influence from the floor.”

The Super 7XRS uses the 7RS driver designed by Louis Chochos of Omega.
