So I finally scraped enough money together to purchase a Montille CV391 power amplifier. I ordered it last week and eagerly await its arrival from Japan. I expect at least a couple of months before I get it so in the meantime I have bought a spare set of tubes for it from Langrex in England who are superb to deal with. I don’t expect to have to change them for a very long time, if ever really, but nice to have a back up set. I still kick myself for not buying all the CV391 tubes a local surplus store had years ago for $5 each… long gone now of course. The CV391 tube was first introduced in 1957 and is also known as the 5B/255M. Data sheet for it here.

I think I will also buy a bottle of Montille Pinot Noir from one of my local establishments to enjoy in celebration. Might be time for another bottle of Vosne Romanee too now I think of it.

It will be interesting to see how it differs in presentation to my Cortese amp. I have heard the CV391 Montille many times in various systems, but not with my high efficiency Petite Latours. It has double the power of my existing amp, but power doesn’t count for much in my book, so I don’t know how that will affect things. I enjoyed the 6V6 based Montille I had about ten years ago, so maybe it will be a bit like that.
