I recently grabbed the tape reissue of In Battle There Is No Law by Bolt Thrower on Darkness Shall Rise Productions, along with Live in Leipzig from locals Diocletian, also on tape.
I’ve had the Bolt Thrower album on vinyl and CD for over 30 years, but somehow never owned it on cassette. It turns out the format really suits that early, rough sound. A bit of hiss, slightly softened edges, nothing fancy. It just fits.
The Diocletian live release only came on tape and LP, and honestly that makes perfect sense. It’s dense, chaotic, and the cassette keeps it sounding thick and ugly in the right way. Brutal and unrelenting war metal. This is apparently a limited edition of 50 as well. I was friends with some of the guys in this band in a past life, but those days and associations are long gone now.
There’s also the nostalgia factor. Tapes are cheap, simple, and they bring back that old tape trading era where this kind of music really lived and spread. That whole DIY feel is part of the appeal.
Simple stuff, but for this kind of music, cassette still makes a lot of sense.
