I have wide and varied musical tastes these days, but my background is one of metal music. Over the years my interests have expanded to include world music, classical, electronica, ambient, drone, noise and whatever else sounds good to my ears, although recently I have found myself drifting into the dark ambient/folk and soundscape type stuff, and discovering more and more awesome metal. Even occasionally jazz will feature, but not often the old school type of stuff, usually modern weirdo jazz. I also create music, well, ambient drone-scapes anyway… maybe this will be released one day.
Below are listed some of the albums that have inspired me over the years, and will add new things that get added to the collection too.
I tend to buy mainly vinyl but cds feature in the collection, especially as the cost of LPs goes through the roof and shipping gets more and more extortionate as time goes on. Recently I have started buying tapes again, usually weird hipster box set limited release things. Tapes definitely have a nostalgia element, reminds me of the 90s when I was doing a lot of tape trading in the underground metal world, and they’re cheap to source.
I have become more discerning with what I actually buy to own, so often physical releases will be a limited edition or a box set or something. I don’t want to collect music for the sake of it and never listen to it. I’ve never understood those people with walls covered in records, that will definitely never get listened to, or people with 10 reissues of the same album. Quality over quantity for me.
