Technics SP-10R

This year marks something of a big birthday for me, and I’ve decided it’s as good an excuse as any to treat myself to something that’s been haunting my mind since the day it was announced, a Technics SP-10R turntable. It’s not a small purchase, and I’ve vacillated on it for a while, but you only live once, so blah.

Sooner or later, it seems that a lot of people who stay in the hifi world long enough end up owning one. I’d always liked the idea of an SP-10, the broadcast pedigree appeals, built for a job that demanded total reliability. But a genuine vintage unit always gave me concern, like all vintage electronics. However well looked after, you’re dealing with electronics over fifty years old, and there’s always the possibility of a capacitor or a motor winding deciding it’s had enough. Not ideal for something meant to be the steady, dependable centre of a system.
So when Technics released the SP-10R a few years ago, I was quite taken with it, the same engineering lineage, without the worry of whether it would still be running in five years’ time. Aesthetically it is fantastic too, clean lines, nothing ‘extra’ that doesn’t need to be there. I’ll be keeping my Garrard though, it’s too awesome of a machine to part with, at least for now. It will be nice to have two units at opposite ends of the engineering and age spectrum.

Companies like Oswalds Mill Audio have taken the SP-10 platform in their own direction, and their cast iron plinths are genuinely superb pieces of work. I’d happily have one, but they’re well beyond what I can justify spending. I really like what Fern & Roby are doing with their ‘Archival’ system as well. Very cool indeed.

I also really like what Lee at Acoustand has been doing with regards to SP-10 plinths. Maybe in the future I will end up with one of those.

Instead, I’ve got a friend building me a plinth. Some of the thinking behind it comes from a friend of mine who has passed beyond the veil, Owen Young, with a few ideas of my own added in, essentially a layered birch ply, but with a heavy steel plate inside and a corian base. It will sit on IsoAcoustics footers, and once finished I’ll mount my Sorane ZA-12 tonearm on it, which is the reason I bought that arm to begin with. The plan is to use a 20mm thick bronze arm board in a similar vein to my Lignolab Garrard plinth. The ZA-12 is a nice match given its transcription length and its appearance certainly matches well with the Technics.

I won’t attempt a full history of the SP-10 here, it’s been well covered elsewhere by people better placed to write it than I am, but a little context seems worthwhile.

The Technics SP-10: Birth of Direct Drive

In 1970, Matsushita Electric (now Panasonic) released a turntable that would reshape the entire audio industry. The Technics SP-10 was the brand’s first product and the world’s first direct-drive turntable, and it arrived not for home listening rooms but for radio and TV studios, where it was designed specifically for professional broadcast applications.

Before the SP-10, turntables relied on belt-drive or idler-wheel systems to spin the platter, and both had a persistent flaw: noise generated due to rotation irregularities or belt vibrations that result from aging. Technics’ engineers took a different approach, connecting a low-speed motor directly to the platter, eliminating the belt and idler entirely. The SP-10 uses a brushless DC motor with a quartz oscillator for precise phase control, ensuring exceptional speed stability, and it shipped with a separate motor unit and control system, enabling instantaneous start/stop operation via a remote control unit, exactly the kind of split-second reliability a broadcast engineer needed.

The SP-10’s influence spread quickly. Its starting torque set a benchmark that later models would be measured against for decades, and the platform kept evolving: in 1975 the much-improved SP-10 mkII arrived with quartz-locked speed control and an external power supply, becoming a fixture in professional studios worldwide, used by broadcasting stations in some 30 countries. A wired-remote version, the mkIIP, was used by the BBC, and the line culminated in the formidable SP-10 mk3, a behemoth with a 10kg platter and a sophisticated power supply featuring a digital pitch readout.

The SP-10’s real cultural impact came through its descendants. Its core technology was later adapted for consumer use in the SL-1100, and that lineage eventually produced the SL-1200, the turntable that, thanks to its direct-drive torque and rock-solid speed, became the tool of choice for hip-hop DJs and turntablists from the late 1970s onward. The stable rotation and quickness to reach rated speed offered by the direct drive system had a major influence on the performance techniques of club DJs who began to appear in the late 1970s.

Decades later, Technics honoured the design directly: in 2017 the company released the SP-10R as the world’s first direct-drive turntable’s spiritual successor, interchangeable with the SP-10 MK2 and MK3 systems, proof that the engineering principles laid down in 1970 still define the top of the turntable market today.

The SP-10R is manufactured in Japan, at Panasonic’s Utsunomiya Factory (Monozukuri Innovation Centre) in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo. This facility is responsible for Technics’ highest-end audio products, including the SL-1000R reference turntable system. Rather than a high-volume production line, the SP-10R is assembled in a dedicated workshop environment by highly trained technicians.
Production is deliberately limited, with every unit individually assembled, calibrated and tested.
Rather than trying to reinvent the direct-drive turntable, Technics has refined the concept to an extraordinary degree. The SP-10R feels like the product of engineers who understood exactly what the original achieved and simply set out to do it better.

I’ve ordered my SP-10R, but I don’t expect to see it for a few months. It really is state of the art, without a lot of the audiophile excess and hyperbole. Exciting times ahead.
