As I become more and more decrepit in old age and faculties fail, accessories to help with cartridge set up become more useful. Seeing as my eyes have always been pretty average at the best of times it was only a matter of time that I would need some sort of visual assistance with setting up cartridges. I have used various illuminated loupes and printers magnifiers in the past, and they have been ok, not great but workable.
The geniuses at WAM Engineering have developed a really nice contraption they call the Wally Loupe.
It offers two large lenses with different focal points and low viewing angles to enable you to see underneath cartridge bodies and actually see the cantilever clearly. It’s very nicely made and way more solid than the photos would suggest. The base has significant weight and doesn’t move around in use.
The custom ground lenses are huge and super clear.
Nicer and less drama to use than a USB microscope for sure.
The view stays fixed, so what you see is what you get, every single time, no more chasing the angle or second-guessing yourself. It turns something that used to be a bit of a faff into a genuinely easy, repeatable step.
There is the option of a fancy storage box for it, which I didn’t get, maybe I should have…. although I shy from spending an extra US$100 on what is essentially a plastic box, so yeah, nah.
They have a handy video explaining it all and showing how to use it too:
Its a really essential tool in essence, I don’t know what I did without it! It certainly wasn’t cheap, but the best things never seem to be.
Several online Illuminati have sung its praises already, I’m not in their lofty company, but I will add my voice to the chorus of approval; this thing is great.
